Psychoeducational evaluations
Psychoeducational evaluations assess key academic areas, including reading, writing, and mathematics, to identify specific challenges your child may be facing. These evaluations can diagnose learning disabilities, and the insights gained can help your child's school offer targeted accommodations and support to enhance their academic success.
FAQs
How do I know if my child needs a psychoeducational evaluation?
Signs of a learning disorder might include difficulty sounding out words or understanding written passages. Other times your child might have difficulty organizing their thoughts into longer written assignments or struggling to remember foundational mathematic functions. In these cases a targeted psychoeducational evaluation will help determine the best path forward for your child.
What does it mean to be diagnosed with a learning disability?
Children with learning disabilities can still succeed at the highest levels, and a psychoeducational evaluation will help determine what learning techniques will best benefit your child.
What does a psychoeducational evaluation entail?
Evaluations begin with an initial parent or guardian meeting where I can gather background information and learn more about their concerns. Next would be a meeting with the client for a few in-person sessions where we would complete cognitive and academic testing. The results of these tests along with a few questionnaires will be compiled into a report that can be used to apply for an individualized education plan (IEP).
Why should we have this done at a private practice When It is OFfered By My Child’s School?
Schools are required to provide educational testing as needed, and provide a classification for an IEP, but are not able to provide a diagnosis of a specific learning disability. Psychoeducational evaluations are also more comprehensive and can incorporate other factors that may be affecting your child outside of the classroom.
